How to Safely Package Sharps Before Drop-Off

Proper packaging protects you, volunteers, and collection staff. Follow these steps before bringing sharps to any drop-off site:

  • Use an approved sharps container. A rigid, puncture-resistant plastic container with a tight-fitting lid is required. Many pharmacies sell these inexpensively, and some county programs provide them free of charge.
  • Never recap needles by hand. Place needles directly into the container immediately after use to prevent accidental needle-stick injuries.
  • Fill only to the fill line. Overfilled containers are unsafe. When the container is two-thirds full, seal it and start a new one.
  • Label the container clearly. Write “Used Sharps — Do Not Recycle” on the outside with a permanent marker.
  • Never place loose sharps in a plastic bag, glass jar, or regular trash. These are not puncture-resistant and will be rejected at collection sites.
