Indiana Infectious Waste Rules in Plain Language
In Indiana, infectious waste is defined by Indiana Department of Health rules at 410 IAC 1-3-10 and by Indiana Code 16-41-16-4 as waste capable of transmitting a dangerous communicable disease, and it covers contaminated sharps, biological cultures, blood and blood products in liquid or semiliquid form, and pathological waste such as tissue and organs. IDEM states that generators, and the companies that serve them, are responsible for proper containment, labeling, effective treatment, transport, and disposal, and that infectious waste must be treated or incinerated before it can be disposed of in a municipal solid waste landfill; the agency also sets out the labeling rule for waste leaving your building, which requires the name, address, and telephone number of the generating facility, a brief description of the waste and the method of effective treatment, and a biohazard symbol on the outer packaging.
